Wanting the Dog

She wants a dog she can trust,
one who can leg it fast, who knows
her dosh is flush on its back, her cash
on the number of the dog’s dog-trap; a dog
on the inside track, one on the up and up,
don’t tell her yup when the answer’s
nope. She wants a dog testing negative
for dope, no pup, a dog who can dupe
another dog on a tight bend, a man’s
best friend at 6-1 and her with a grand
on the nose, on the paw, on the tail,
on the twelve-inch tongue, on the bark
and bite, on the howl and growl and yowl
of the dog who’s going to win tonight by a mile.
